Useless Things #1

October 31, 2006

Kanako tells me that my blog has not been updated for some time. That’s true. However, I doubt anyone reads it (Kanako is the exception) so I don’t feel compelled, or that I’m being overly neglectful.

In any case, I often see things the significance of which I really have to question. There are so many, that I’m titling this post with #1 and hoping that it will be first in a series. Of course I waste as much time as any other American male, but I do have to wonder about certain persuits that just seem like so big a waste of time and effort that I want to make a note of them.

First? Paranormal Investigation. This includes any TV shows that deal with so-called investigations of hauntings. I’m not talking about the ones that recount some scary happenings that have occurred or reenactments of a famous haunting, etc. I’m talking about those shows where a team of investigators comes in to search for some sign of paranormal activity. If it’s an hour show that means it’s 60 whole minutes of wasted time. What do they find? Not much. What do we see? Tape of the team walking around the haunted place talking about what they’re supposedly experiencing. We see a lot of machines and readouts that supposedly show some sort of activity but it’s akin to watching an electrocardiogram.

I hate those shows which strap a camera around someone’s neck and we see their reaction to whatever’s happening (again, not much). If it’s a paranormal investigation show I will bet money that no evidence will be found. Do we ever see a ghost on tape? No. These shows always contain the same information and never give us the big payoff their promos promise (or imply).

And I have to wonder about paranormal investigation as an occupation. Okay, when I was in high school I thought about paranormal studies as a college major, but after all this time I think there are a lot more worthwhile jobs out there, like being a surgeon, house painter or garbageman.
