More Macworld fashion

January 11, 2007

Yesterday I spied a guy standing in line for a conference who was wearing a tricorn hat (aka a Pirate hat). That was another first. It makes me wonder what prompts someone to want to stand out like that. THey have to know it’s going to invite some degree of ridicule.

It’s easy to be “an individual” through fashion, but I believe real individuality comes through actions, not appearances. And it takes time for that individuality to be recognized.

It also makes me think about living in this country and being glad that we are a nation of laws. My mind wanders to hypothetical events and their consequences. What if there were some emergency like a terrorist attack on LA that forced everyone onto the highways? Would we all act courteously as we tried to escape to safety? Unfortunately, I doubt it. Every man for himself, I think, would be the case. Individuality, in a sense, would be the order of the day. Without our laws, I think we would decsend into anarchy very quickly and rare would be the instance where some would overcome that desire for self-preservation and act with the good of all in mind.

All this from a pirate hat? Anyway, that’s how my mind works.

Excitement in SF

January 10, 2007

My friend Joanna, who has recently moved to SF was supposed to pick me up at the Oakland airport on Sunday when I arrived. She had been feeling pretty bad (constant vomiting) the last few days. We talked about the possibility of appendicitis since she knew of it well when mine burst two years ago and she had to take me to the hospital. Well, I checked my messages yesterday and got a message saying she was in the hospital getting ready to have her appendix out. ALmost two years exactly from when mine acted up.

The FlashForward presentation here at Macworld was a bit tedious (I hate programming and the intro to ActionScript was numbing my brain), so I cut it short and took a cab to her hospital. I was there about 5 minutes when they wheeled her out of the recovery room. She was in a lot better shape than I was after my surgery. Her girlfriend, Pam and Pam’s cousin were also there and we accompanied Joanna to her room. Looks like they had to make the big incision because her appendix had ruptured just like mine. Now we get to compare scars.

Macworld Expo 2007 (There’s always a kilt)

January 10, 2007

I think I’ve been coming to Macworld for ten years now. I alwazys look forward to what people are wearing. There’ sthe ubiquitious leather hat (is it a cowboy hat? Is it the Crocodile Dundee hat, minus the croc teeth band?). But there’s also a least one guy wearing a kilt. I don’t know why. I saw at least one guy so far wearing a kilt. It’s 50 degrees outside. I hope he’s warm enough.
